The Unyielding Wish: A Takari Story

Written to the song "The Unyielding Wish" from Magic Knight Rayearth

Hold into that dream!
Tomorrow knows where and when
It's true--what you believe
Don't let go--the road will never end!

Kari rolled over and opened her eyes. It was after midnight, but she couldn't sleep. Gatomon slept quietly next to her. She had just found out today that TK would be going on a year long trip to America for an exchange program. When she heard this, Kari suddenly realized how much she love him. But being in love and telling the one you love are two different things.

The sunset melts into the deep blue sea
It turns a crimson shade
A wonderful free fall
I just want to have the wind
Take me faraway
I've cleared impossible hurdles before,
But I know that there's more,
And I know I can make it
Who's to blame when it's not the best
That I can achieve?

The rest of the week, Kari struggled with her feelings. She thought back through time of all the adventures they had together with their friends. Becoming the eighth DigiDestined child and meeting Gatomon; returning with TK to the Digital World a few years later with the new DigiDestined; defeating MaloMyotismon. All these moments lay in her hears, but there was another feeling as well. No matter what happened, TK always looked out for her, protecting her.

Hold onto that dream!
Tomorrow knows where and when
It's true--what you believe
Don't let go--the road will never end!
Keep tryin' to believe
The biggest part of you--
And now you're ready to go!

A month later, the DigiDestined held a going-away party for TK, who'd be leaving the next morning. (Patamon would be staying with Matt and Gabumon). Kari finally got up the courage to tell him how she felt and arrived at the party early. But Matt and Mimi were already there and through the rest of the evening, she didn't get a chance to be alone with TK.

How much longer do I have to cry
Before tomorrow's light?
A night full of sorrow
All at once I found today
I've finally hid my limits
I'm sure that when you are falling in love
It's just like blinking your eyes
Before you know it, it flies away!
I just want to learn how strong I can be
When I'm searching for love!

Finally the party ended and everyone left. Kari waited until she was the last one there. She then turned to TK and let out the feelings she had been keeping pent up. When he didn't answer right away, Kari burst into tears and ran out of the apartment and home.

Hold onto that dream!
Tomorrow knows where and when
My lips're tightly sealed
But you can still see it in my eyes--
I've traveled down that road
And found the greater love
This time I know it is real!

Flinging herself on the bed, Kari cried for what seemed like hours, but was really only a few minutes. Tai tried to help his sister, but she wouldn't talk to anyone. She rolled up into a ball and pulled the blanket up over her head. Nothing was heard for several minutes when a light patter cam against the window. Turning over, she saw Patamon knocking on the window pane.

I've cleared impossible hurdles before
But I know that there's more
And I know I can make it!
But when I got to the starting line,
My legs were frozen with fear!

Opening the window and going out onto the porch, Kari spotted TK standing on the sidewalk in front of the apartment building. She ran out of the apartment, down the stairs, and outside while Patamon and Gatomon watched from the porch. Stopping two feet from him, Kari silently looked at TK, who then explained that he loved her too, and had been planning on telling her tonight, but wasn't sure she would feel the same way. She when she admitted her feelings first, her was shocked that she actually loved him, and was speechless, though he wanted to say the same thing back.

Hold onto that dream!
Tomorrow knows where and when
Reach out--unfold your arms
And take the key that opens up your heart!

Closing the small distance between them, TK put his had on the back of Kari's neck and drew her in for a kiss. Kari wrapped her arms around him and returned the kiss with all the love she had. Upon the balcony, Patamon and Gatomon were cheering for the two when Patamon looked over at Gatomon and kissed her. Turning bright red, he looked away, but Gatomon grabbed him and kissed him right back.

Hold onto that dream!
Tomorrow knows where and when
It's true--what you believe
Don't let go--the road will never end!

The year that TK was gone felt like an eternity to Kari, but they kept in touch with letters and talked on the phone as often as they could. So when his plane landed in the airport, Kari was the first one to greet him (soon followed by Patamon and Gatomon) and gave him a big kiss.

Keep tryin' to believe
The biggest part of you--
And now you're ready to go!

The following year, belles rang out as TK and his wife, Kari, left the church among the cheers of friends and family. Among all the hugs and congratulations, Tai gave his new brother-in-law a little talk about making Kari happy, or he'd have to answer to her brother. Kari quickly broke that up and told Tai that she was already happy and he should mind his own business. Then the newlyweds and Patamon and Gatomon climbed into the limo and drove away. They'd meet back with the others at the party, and that night, TK and Kari would be leaving on their honeymoon. The two Digimon were a little upset at being left out, but they knew that the couple would want to be alone. So they put themselves in charge of the welcome home party!
